The CareFull Supervisor: A New Approach to Leadership and Management

Written by Kevin Burns | Nov 24, 2023 3:15:00 PM

My new book, The CareFull Supervisor: The Tools to Succeed and Become the Supervisor Employees Want to Have is based on the idea that supervisors should be full of care for their employees as human beings, not just as workers. It is a way of leading and managing that focuses on compassion, communication, and collaboration.

Many supervisors were promoted to their positions because they were either the most experienced employees or rock-star employees that managers wanted more of their employees to be like. But the moment a rock-star employee becomes a supervisor is the same as when a high-scoring hockey player becomes the coach.

It requires a completely different set of skills to be successful. The skills that allowed you to be a high-performing employee are essentially made redundant the moment you become the supervisor.

Employees want you to be a good coach, to communicate well, to help with career development, to empower the team, and to create better motivation. Skills that most supervisors don't immediately possess.

Why is being a CareFull Supervisor so important?

Because it can bring many benefits to your organization, like:

Increased employee engagement and satisfaction.

When employees feel valued, respected, and supported by their supervisors, they are more likely to be motivated, productive, and loyal.

Improved team performance and outcomes. When supervisors foster a culture of learning and growth, they help their employees develop their skills, solve problems, and innovate.

Enhanced organizational reputation and image. When supervisors promote teamwork, equity, and inclusion, they create a positive and inclusive work environment that attracts and retains talent, customers, and partners.

But how can you become a CareFull Supervisor?

In my book, I share with you the best practices and experiences of successful supervisors. I also provide you with practical tips and strategies that you can use in your daily supervision practice.

But until the book is released, what can you do? Here are three takeaway ideas that you can start implementing today as a CareFull Supervisor:

Show empathy and compassion. Try to understand the feelings, needs, and perspectives of your employees. Express genuine interest and concern for their well-being and performance.

Communicate effectively and respectfully. Use clear, concise, and courteous language. Listen actively and attentively. Give and receive feedback constructively. Avoid assumptions and judgments.

Collaborate and cooperate. Encourage teamwork and cooperation among your employees. Involve them in decision-making and problem-solving. Recognize and reward their contributions. Celebrate their successes.

These are just some of the ways that you can become a more effective and caring leader who can inspire and empower your team.
